My Simplified Plans

As you read in my last post, I started my fiftieth year and a month ahead of the beginning of 2020 with LOTS of BIG COMPLICATED plans! After that post, I became quite intentional about what of those plans worked and what didn’t. Some I kept. Some I tweaked. Some I let go.

So where did I land with all those plans?

Bible Study:

I put aside the Fruit of the Spirit topical study for a bit. I’m sure I will come back to it at some point. I may even do a day or two of it scattered throughout my studies. It’s good material. It’s a great topic to study and learn how to apply. After all, being filled with the Holy Spirit is our Christian walk. I just found myself doing it out of obligation…to check it off one of my many to-do lists. I did not feel like I was at a point where God was speaking to me through that study.

Instead, I decided to go back to my favorite type of study…Inductive Study of a book of the Bible taking it verse by verse. It is an investigative type of study that includes observation, interpretation, and application. I personally use Kay Arthur’s New Inductive Study series to help guide me through my study. I’ve used it for years and seem to always go back to it. One of the things I like most about it (and sometimes find frustrating at the same time) is that the study materials do not tell me what I should find. It doesn’t tell me what the scriptures mean. Instead, it leads me to find out what’s in the passage, what it means based on the five W and one H questions, and then to apply that to my own life. Using this method, I’ve studied all of the New Testament except Luke (which is what I’m studying now) and Revelation. I’ve studied many Old Testament books, as well, but still have most of those to do.

If you are looking for a starting point for this type of study, I found Psalms to be a great beginning for me!

Gratitude

I’m not sure why I tend to think I need to change things that are actually working for me! I attempted to use an actual gratitude journal where you write out three things you’re thankful for each day at the end of the day. It’s a good way to practice gratitude if that works for you. For me, it just wasn’t working.

I have kept a gratitude calendar for over ten years now. It works for me! On a small version of a wall type calendar I write a phrase or two of what I’m thankful for each day. When I found the journal just wasn’t cutting it for me…or maybe I wasn’t cutting it that way…I went to the Dollar General Store, paid 50 cents for a small wall calendar, and restarted my habit.

Photo a Day

I decided to go with this one! However, I’m using the little daily photo lists I found as suggestions not hard, fast requirements. That has freed me up to catch moments that mean something to me during the day! I also have given myself permission to use the WW photo a day as an optional thing for me. Some days I participate; some days I don’t.

Adventure

Friends…this is really hard for me! I want to be adventurous. Really, I do. But goodness gracious! Fear (often silly fears) and anxiety often get the best of me. My husband, on the other hand, is and has always been quite adventurous, so he will help me with this! The thing is, I have to let him. He can only push through my craziness so far before he wonders if it’s time to stop. I’m working to let go of the instant reaction of “no” when faced with trying new things.

One way we are planning to adventure more is making sure we always have our next camping trip planned and booked! We just got back from a fabulous trip to Jekyll Island. We have our next trip to the Smokey Mountains planned. We are figuring out the next trip after that one! Fun times are ahead!

I think that about covers it for now! I’m continuing to work on transforming body and mind during this, my fiftieth year!
